Carlsberg Kilkenny Rhythm n' Roots
Weekend
The fourth
annual Carlsberg Kilkenny Rhythm n' Roots Weekend took place in venues throughout Kilkenny
on the May bank holiday weekend. The Carlsberg Kilkenny Rhythm n' Roots Weekend has become
a highlight on Ireland's musical calender, taking in, as it does, the various elements of
music that comes under the Roots banner, country, blues, folk, rockabilly, Americana,
cajun and western swing. This is the place to see up and coming quality acts on their way
to success and to see masters in their field enjoy the rapturous reception Kilkenny has to
offer.

Some of the
outstanding bands to appear were Chris Thomas King who was in O Brother Where Art Thou,
the Coen Brothers' movie as the Robert Johnson character. He is a critically acclaimed
bluesman who has consistently been ahead of his time. The New Orleans native is a rocking
pop and soul artist with blues roots.
Other acts headlining included Ryan Adams who has
everything from cheeky rockers to textured pop epics to soft spoken and heart broken
tomes. For most though Phillidelphia based Marah stole the show. They have the rare,
undeniably cool swagger of a genuine rock 'n' roll band. David Fricke described their
sound in Rolling Stone as "what Exile on Main Street might have been if the Stones
had made it on a Folkways Records budget." One of Steve Earle's favourite bands.
