Crafts Council
In 1965 one of Europe's top design workshops was established in the castle yard, Kilkenny by the Irish Government.  Kilkenny design went on to lead in the production and design of outstanding crafts and industrial design. After the break up the of Kilkenny design craftworkers remained and established studio workshops throughout the city and county making Kilkenny the true crafts capital of Ireland.

The National Craft Gallery
In 1999 the Crafts Council of Ireland relocated their headquarters to the castle yard the original home of Kilkenny Design. They subsequently established the National Craft Gallery in 2001. The crafts gallery now plays host to Ireland's best known crafts and craft works.

A native of Kilkenny, Liam Costigan worked as a goldsmith with Kilkenny Design Workshops before setting up his own shop and workshop in Colliers Lane, Kilkenny in 1980.

Des ByrneDes Byrne is one of Irelands leading and best known silversmiths. Amongst his many credits was the commission to re-build the Sam McGuire Cup.
