Kilkenny Castle
In 1260 William the Earl Marshall built the first stone castle on the current site of
Kilkenny Castle. Previous to this Strongbow had constructed the first building, a wooden
tower in the 12th century. This first stone tower had towers at each corner of the square
castle three of which to this day. In 1391 the Butler family bought the Castle and
remained there until 1935. The Butler Family, Earlts, Marquesses and Dukes of Ormonde
lived here in the castle for over five hundred years. In 1967 the castle and property were
given to the Nation and are now managed by Dúchas (The National Heritage Council).
Kilkenny castle now provides the city not only with a synonymous icon but the Butler Art
Gallery. The gallery houses a permanent art collection and frequently features touring
exhibitions. The extensive grounds are also open to the public and on a hot summers day
provide the ideal space to relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty.
